NIH established a DataCite Consortium membership as part of the efforts to streamline the ability for NIH funded resources to be able to easily mint digital object identifiers (DOIs). Existing ICO memberships will be rolled under the NIH Consortium membership. ICOs not already members can request to join at no cost. Please contact ODSS at NIH-DATACITE@list.nih.gov
DOIs are persistent identifiers that help data preservation, citation and serve as a measure for data reuse. This is important in the context of the new data management and sharing policy and its implementation to enhance discoverability and access of NIH funded data. Additionally, it will be cost effective established as a NIH consortium while providing seamless, coordinated technical and administrative support and enable easy scalability to support the anticipated growth in need for DOIs.
